There are lots of sites that promise goods and services at very low prices. These prices are lower than what you know the manufacturer is selling them for or way below the value of the service.
Great deal or rip off?
I have learnt ( to my detriment) that if it looks too good to be true, chances are that’s what it is. Wariness never hurt anyone, but foolhardiness can cost you a pretty bundle.
There are indeed great deals to be found on the net. I always recommend that you benchmark these deals against eBay prices. If they are significantly lower, then that is the first red flag. STOP! Take sometime to check out the site offering the deal.
Many newbies believe that if a site has page rank and has various seals it means that the site will not attempt to rip them off. It must be noted that a site may have decent page rank, but that is not a guarantee.
A better method of checking that site is to search the major engines such as google, yahoo and MSN. When persons have had bad experiences with a site they often time post their reviews in blogs or forums. If there is nothing to be found that is good, now you have to make a judgement call on whether the deal is worth the potential risks in losing you money.
I have seen sites with good PR that had numerous complaints against them for suspected unscrupulous action. One site that I would have spent $299 for an ecommerce site, turned out to be a fraud, and I only discovered that by checking web reviews on the site. Even a seal from the Better Business Bureau was not a guarantee.
Your recourse on the net, is to keep informed and updated with current net trends and scams. Knowledge is the key to your power.
